Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Thomas Betterton and I took a trip through Utah and into Nevada. We had around 2 weeks of climbing and were fortunate enough to climb quite a few classic boulder problems in areas such as Joe's Valley, Moe's Valley, and Red Rocks.</div>

Here are a few pictures from the trip ... and keep an eye out for a video in the not too distant future !!</div>

The last few months have possibly been the busiest of my life... </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Right now I am in Atlanta, hanging out at my parents house and tomorrow I will catch a flight back to Denver. With a little down time it seems fit to write and let everyone in on what's been happening in my world.</div>
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
In early September I began the ABS 15 season, not as a competitor but as a route setter.</div>

<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Through working at the Denver Bouldering Club, I have found setting to be an avenue into which I can pour energy and creativity while at the same time become a better climber.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The great folks who run the gym have been gracious enough to allow flexibility in my schedule so that I can travel to competitions to learn from the other route setters and gain more knowledge and experience.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
I won't go through every comp in detail, but I can say that I have learned something unique at each event... setting at a new gym can be a learning experience in itself... getting to set with different people, holds, wall angles.. it really has helped me to become a more well rounded setter. It also allowed me to meet other setters and chat with them about why they enjoy what they do, which in turn gets me even more psyched to be a part of the world of setting. So many different perspectives being translated onto the wall, very cool to see.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
As far as ABS Regionals goes, I knew everyone going into the event fairly well and I think that really showed. We all worked well independently, which really helped make the problems cool and all the problems had a nice variety in style. When it came down to fore running and tweaking, everyone was very professional and we worked well as a group. All in all it was a great learning experience. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The kitchen had been my area of focus for the last 3 or 4 years, but I knew that I could no longer juggle my passion for cooking with my passion for climbing. All of my eggs needed to be in one basket.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I put down the chef's knife, in a sense. It was more like I put down the pounds and pounds of shrimp I had to peel and devein everyday... and I started working at the Denver Bouldering Club.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It all started with wanting to improve my climbing and spend more time around people who shared the same passion for climbing as I did. That is where I still am today. Sure climbing can be seen as a job, or as an occupation, or as a means of making money.. I see it as a lifestyle.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After a nice trip back to the Southeast over the Christmas holiday, its back to the daily here in Denver. Almost a full month into the New Year and I gotta say I am pretty jazzed up about 2013. Work at the climbing gym has been great. I can't express how nice it is to walk into an atmosphere where everybody is psyched; the staff, the climbers - the general attitude of everyone there is great.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also have been back at my project in Matthew-Winters Park which has become EPIC.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Falling at the pocket move, falling off the second move and the third move and the fifth move. WHY is bouldering so difficult. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Concentrate, focus. Conditions are good, could be better. Stop. Focus. Breathe. Everything you got.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It will only come down to one or two minutes on one day. Then it will end, and the search will continue!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/58384558" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Aside from the usual I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to head out to Red Rocks with the DBC crew this past weekend. Like a mix between Hueco Tanks and Joe's Valley, the amount of sandstone boulders seems to be limitless. We climbed a lot of cool problems and made plans for a return trip in two weeks to finish off a few that were left undone.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a video of some of the problems we climbed ...</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After what seemed like a long time away from my roots in the Southeast (10 months), I got back to Chattanooga, TN over the Holiday. It was great to visit with family/friends and to spend time in such a great place. I was even able to get a good bit of climbing in !</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I met up with some old friends for sessions at The Stone Summit in Atlanta as well as The Tennessee Bouldering Authority, the latter being the gym that I grew up and learned how to climb in. Both gyms are much different than The Denver Bouldering Club and I got worked on all the tough, powerful problems.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also got out and climbed on some of the great Southern sandstone that I once visited so often. Aside from running the circuit at LRC and a quick session at the Honeycomb Roof in Dayton, I made it to a newer area near Sand Rock in northern Alabama. The area, Griffin Falls, is mostly known for being a rope climbing area although it is now home to one of the most difficult boulder problems in the Southeast, Aggravated Assault.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Given the v14 grade by Daniel and Jimmy (making it the first of the grade in the Southeastern states), the boulder problem shoots straight out a near horizontal roof on less than positive edges and underclings. With really unique movement on superb rock, this problem will no doubt be a longtime test piece for strong climbers visiting the area.</div>

<br />
Just got back from a nice stay in Joe's. With several miles of canyons littered with black sandstone boulders, Joe's Valley is a climber's playground. Along on the trip were good friends Sarah and Ivo Penchev.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The plan was general: get away from the city, climb a few old projects, check out some new one's.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrPzZAXWN2ppU1gZyjl1RVx0soylJt1jpVVLd7myhFboH9TdH6QhxAwDR-XqQR_gYatGlGLWCCD-DYYRju8A1-Z4avR9PpHShYAWJclnZ6sIfmtADOHBlKHXbfkhzxW5aQKXXBO-4V6fxF/s1600/Lichen_Texture_Joes.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="335" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrPzZAXWN2ppU1gZyjl1RVx0soylJt1jpVVLd7myhFboH9TdH6QhxAwDR-XqQR_gYatGlGLWCCD-DYYRju8A1-Z4avR9PpHShYAWJclnZ6sIfmtADOHBlKHXbfkhzxW5aQKXXBO-4V6fxF/s400/Lichen_Texture_Joes.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Going into the trip I felt like I was in decent shape and looked forward to climbing a couple problems I had tried and failed on in the past. Of those old projects, the one that stands out is <b>Beyond Life</b>. At v10, the "stand" has become my nemesis over the years. For the longest time I thought that the boulder was very height dependent. I think the key here is body positioning and contact strength. After sticking the difficult crux move to the left hand edge for the first time, I was able to climb this one to the top.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a lot of video to sort through from the trip and will be putting
up a short clip sometime in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another goal was to check out a boulder across the creek, early on in Left Fork. Established by Anthony Chertudi, <b>Zodiac v11</b> climbs the left side of a huge black boulder via pockets and edges. I tried it for a bit, figured out some beta that worked for me, and made a good link into the middle of the boulder. Unfortunately the end requires more pads than we had and I was done for the day. This one is still waiting for a 2nd ascent, though it was getting some traffic later in the week from Mina L-W and Nick O.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Amazing new line. Sounds like it was a group effort to clean this one up and build a massive landing underneath it. No doubt it will be a contender for the best boulder in Joe's, in my mind it's right there with Black Dahlia in terms of quality.<br />

I walked into the Tennessee Bouldering Authority in the summer of 2000. A smaller scale bouldering gym, TBA became my home for many years. With small walls that focus on training power, the thing that I like a lot about TBA is the really great focus on community. The owners would coach us in the gym during the week and take us out bouldering to LRC, Rocktown and HP40 on the weekends. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hats off to Luis Rodriguez, Eric Pittman and others for building the base that really lead to the growth of climbing, especially bouldering, in Chattanooga. Luis, you set the bar high man! I hear news of a sick new steep wall just built by the guys at TBA. Go check it out!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe-5TpRxfm57J-bEpY79UJhdiAcxIX3G4dZ9izPne90HenlK4q9QrEa1b1phKQ5UazVIUDmf6gfgOxiQ5goHRThzh6YMa2I1jW5PFN36zo4VgR1zc1Hgp0mKIhOSOVwZrTYZ-W64fTdoOc/s1600/TBA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe-5TpRxfm57J-bEpY79UJhdiAcxIX3G4dZ9izPne90HenlK4q9QrEa1b1phKQ5UazVIUDmf6gfgOxiQ5goHRThzh6YMa2I1jW5PFN36zo4VgR1zc1Hgp0mKIhOSOVwZrTYZ-W64fTdoOc/s1600/TBA.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I moved to Denver, I quickly became an active member at the Denver Bouldering Club (DBC.) This gym has many similarities to TBA. Abbreviated title. Cool bouldering walls. Sense of community. I think of it as TBA, but a little bigger.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A few weeks ago I accepted a position working for Thomas Betterton, owner of the DBC. This will include many odd jobs around the gym, cleaning, front desk work, etc... The time I have on my hands is allowing me to fully embrace aspects of the climbing world that I only had small amounts of time for in the past. Along with the other small jobs, I am very excited to continue working as a route setter.</div>

Excited to start working on a couple other projects also, especially a climbing video focused on climbers that fly under the radar here in CO. Making plans for traveling to Joe's Valley, the Southeast, and Hueco over the next 6 months or so. Psyched!!</div>

For me, it has always been exciting to change things up and start fresh. On that note I have decided to step back from life in the kitchen to explore what the outdoor industry has to offer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Looking forward to working with the crew at the <a href="http://denverboulderingclub.com/" target="_blank">Denver Bouldering Club</a> as they expand their space by adding two brand new Walltopia walls! Gonna be insane! These walls are WAY cooler than anything I have seen, competition or gym.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This summer has gone by in what seems like the blink of an eye. Five days a week I am consumed by work at The Corner Office Restaurant in Denver, CO. Most of my climbing has been done in the gym. Trying to stay motivated through Colorado's strange, seemingly bi-polar weather. Amazing one week, insanely hot or rainy the next.</div>

Everyday spent out in the mountains is amazing. Different each day. This dynamic is what keeps me motivated and psyched to return. The climbing community is full of incredible people, each person with a different perspective than the next. I consider myself very fortunate to have found such an amazing life-style sport into which I can pour so much emotion and energy. I can say confidently that climbing will continue to be a huge aspect of my life for many years to come.<br />

Conditions were great all weekend and we took advantage. Had a great session at the Mirkwood cave in Upper Chaos, with a hang-on-for-dear-life last attempt that ended with a successful ascent of <b>Mirkwood v10</b>. Alex Kordick, Ivo Penchev and Mark Avery all put in good efforts with ascents of the stand also and followed with strong climbing on the sit. The sit, <b>I Comb My Hair Like God v11</b>, starts three moves lower than Mirkwood with toe hooks and slaps on bad holds ... very cool rock climb.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Sunday, I headed to Area B with Ivo Penchev to check out some climbs we hadn't seen before. With the weather close to perfect, we headed straight to an amazing CO test piece, <b>Gorillas in the Mist v11</b>. Unlike the infamous Dali boulder, <b>Gorillas</b> is almost perfectly smooth granite, with compression being the main way to unlock the movements. Ivo came stupid close to flashing the boulder, falling at the lip on the first effort. The boulder went unclimbed that day, no doubt we will head back there soon ...</div><div style="text-align: center;"> <br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">Monday was third day on. 3rd day in the alpine!! I think I made it 6 days on at Lincoln once earlier this summer, safe to say not much was going down ... So Lincoln Lake seemed the obvious choice. A slow, relaxed start to the morning got us down to the boulders around 2pm and once again we headed in the direction of a few boulders I hadn't seen before.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">We met up with Zack Sticcs and others from B-Town at an amazing boulder, <b>Front Range on Fire v7/8</b> (FA : Greedy). After some warm-up attempts figuring out the beta, I climbed the boulder to the top. Another awesome boulder at Lincoln that I had known about for a while, but never seen. Connor Griffith added a lower start to the boulder; by starting on the right facing gaston and an undercling before pulling on and doing a move to the right start hold of the boulder. Nice one! <br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Although it is awesome beyond belief that I get to go climbing at areas like Mt Evans and RMNP, I am welcoming the cooler weather with open arms. Can't wait to get back to life on the front range. With the changing of seasons, new motivation builds to go to areas I haven't been in months. Just a few on the list are Poudre Canyon, Newlin Creek, EndoValley, Boulder Canyon, etc.... the list continues. Each of these areas are home to countless classic boulder problems with many more to be developed. Looking forward to hiking around in the mountains this fall / winter.... hopefully to find some nice new boulders !!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Lots of climbing, hiking, falling, shooting video, taking pictures and good times in the mountains with cool people. Can't go wrong.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Lincoln Lake</b> has continued to be my destination of choice, with tons and TONS of possibility for new boulder problems. <b>Ivo Penchev</b> wondered into a cave a few weeks ago and found some AMAZING new lines. After brushing up holds, I was able to climb <b>Life of Arete v8 (</b><a href="http://www.vimeo.com/27803893">video of Patrick Fitts climbing the third ascent</a>) and <b>The Odyssey v9</b> for their first ascents. Ivo followed in suit with second ascents of each. Great new additions to the bouldering area!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I was also able to climb a nice new slab line just up the talus from The Mothman Prophecies. It is now dubbed <b>The EZ Slab v5</b>. Located on the right side of a HUGE slab boulder, this one starts in between two chest-high boulders and climbs small holds for about 12 feet.. then exits right up an easy (walkable) slab dihedral. Go do it!!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;"> The incredible / unpredictable days spent in the mountains (most of the time above 10K feet) are slowly coming to an end. As usual the August weather has been tough to negotiate; checking and double checking weather forecasts, humidity percents, wind direction and speed. Rain is almost an every day occurrence. BUT it's all good.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So much goes into bouldering here and it is truly amazing to be a part of the experience that is CO during the summer!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's some pictures to recap the last few weeks : : :</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Went hard in the paint!! Tried hard...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Over the weekend, I got out to a few bouldering areas outside Denver. The plan was to hit Rocky Mountain National Park on Saturday, then (if not too wrecked from the long day) head to a few remote boulders at Mt. Evans the next day.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The day at RMNP was good. I drove to Golden to meet up with Ivo Penchev and Thomas Betterton (part owner of the <a href="http://denverboulderingclub.com/">DBC</a>). The now very familiar drive through Boulder, Lyons and Estes Park went by quick as did the 45 minute hike into the Upper Chaos boulders. Got on Silven's boulder, <b>The Seeping</b>, which Thomas was able to hook up after an hour or so. Awesome roof boulder, but damn tough!!<br />
<br />
Then it was off to try <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Riddles in the Park</b>.</span> After a while working out the moves, I was able to climb into the stand from the beginning. Definitely sparked some psyche! This one has two difficult opening moves which lead to around 10 more sustained movements on ok holds. ENDURO-FEST!! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

On Sunday, after relaying some less than motivated messages to Ivo, I was forced to go climbing at Mt. Evans. Not really forced, let's just say energy was low starting out the day. I parked at Summit Lake on Mt. Evans and began the long hike down into the canyon, towards the Area D boulders.<br />
<br />
I got there right around 3pm, just as the sun was starting to hit two out of the four main boulder problems in the area. After a quick warm-up on the much hyped but now broken <b>Equitas</b> (the left start hold of the sit is broken, the stand is still climbable at around v7) we headed over to THE highball in Colorado, <b>The Nothing</b>.<br />

One of my favorite styles of climbing is trying hard on that first effort. You only get to try a boulder for the first time ONCE so why not make it worth while. One try, all your effort, climbing into unknown and sometimes uncomfortable territory.<br />
<br />
I watched Ivo, Jaeger and Jeff climb on it for a bit then decided it was time to give a solid first effort. I pulled on and every movement continued to click until I was at the top of the boulder.<br />
PERFECT<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">The initial few days of the season have been productive in the sense that many new boulders have been added already. Because the majority of climbers began going there after the snow melted last season, there are many boulders that are climbable in their current condition (lots of snow, making for mostly flat landings) that were not climbed last season. This is another detail unique to the area... Some boulders will be climbable only in the early season, some only in the late season!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Four months out of the year, the snow melts off and we climbers are allowed access to this unique place. In a world where we humans are considered "outsiders," bouldering brings on a new meaning altogether. Every trip down into the boulders is more like an adventure, not knowing exactly what you're getting yourself into.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">It seems that after the harsh winter, many of the climbs need a bit of "re-cleaning." That being said, a large majority of the opened boulders are ready to go!! Only a few remain unclimbable due to snow, but I'm sure these will clear out in the next few weeks.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Along with a few others, I will be shooting video along the way and hopefully we can collaborate and release a nice Alpine summer bouldering short in the future. In the meantime, get out there and do a bit of searching!!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">For the next few months, the more motivated climbers in Colorado (and from all over the country) will be trudging up and down monster hills, snow and talus fields to get to some of the best boulders in the United States. Alpine season is a kind of treat in the sense that the majority of these boulders are only climbable for 3 to 4 months out of the year.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park has been uncovered, climbed and then recovered in snow countless times. Climbers are staying true to the Park despite the <a href="http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_18129240">bad May weather</a> though. The re-emergence of Endo Valley has RMNPers just as motiovated as last year's Lincoln Lake aka Wolvo Land development. The opportunity to climb first ascents brings a renewed motivation and the simple fact that climbing on new boulders (especially in Colorado) is a treat. Check out Jamie Emerson's <a href="http://www.b3bouldering.com/">blog</a> for info about Endo and (as always) a ton of interesting comments.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">This weekend marked the opening of the summit road at Mt. Evans. For many, this was a long time coming and over the weekend dozens of climbers descended on familiar territory. Lincoln Lake was a huge hit among the bouldering scene last summer and I can only hope that the same energy returns to the boulder field this season. For those that want to know the official elevation at the boulders is around 11, 500 ft. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">This summer, like the last few, a bunch of buddies from the South East are heading out to test their skills on the granite boulders. We will be taking pictures and shooting lots of video along the way so stay tuned for a massive media dump!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Every Spring and Fall, climbers from all around the world gather in a small valley outside Orangeville, Utah. Joe's Valley has been known (for the last 20 or so years) to be home to some of the nicest sandstone boulders in the country. There is a sort of remote feeling that surrounds the area, making it a truly unique climbing experience.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Highlights of the trips include climbing Resident Evil (<a href="http://vimeo.com/21722806">video here</a> - thanks to Ivo Penchev), waking up to 3 inches of snow outside my tent and drinking a few beers at the local bar.<br />
